Gin Rummy Volume 3

September welcomes Gin Rummy, the third barrel-aged gin from Batch.

Once again we shuffled the deck and changed the fundamental parts of the recipe. Gin Rummy has a base spirit of gin with notes of sweet pear. It is then aged in the same barrels used for our PX Sherry Cask Rum, adding a rich, golden hue. The result is a complex spirit that balances sweetness with the oaky notes of the barrel. Enjoy this unusual spirit with tonic or cola to complement the rum notes.

 Inspiration

After the popularity of our other cask-aged gins, we’ve been looking forward to releasing the third product in our Gin Rummy series. Head Distiller, Ollie, suggested we added pear to distillation as a nod to the Pendleside Hospice Gin recipe from 2017, as they are once again our nominated charity. The addition of pear adds a lingering sweetness to the gin, which sits perfectly with the oaky notes from the barrel ageing process.

On the 4th of September Team Batch took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for the charity. Hiking a gruelling course with 2,153m of climb over 24.5 miles, tackling Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. The day was a success and we will continue to raise money for the charity!

 The barrels

While on a family holiday to Cordoba, Spain, we purchased retired PX Sherry casks. PX sherry being a sweet, sticky, rich and fruity dessert sherry, which has long been paired with rum cocktails. So after we got home with our happy purchase, it seemed natural that we would age a rum in these barrels. The PX Sherry Cask Rum is absorbed by the wood of the barrels and once the gin is added slowly releases and adds an oaky warmth to the sweet gin.

Bodie Cameron continues the tradition with Septembers Innovations label. This year’s Gin Rummy is the Queen of Diamonds who sits beautifully in the striking collection. Our first ever barrel-aged gin featured the Queen of Spades and the Queen of Hearts graced the bottle for 2020’s volume. Together they reign supreme across the Batch barrel-aged gin collection!

Perfect Serve

As ever with our barrel aged gins, we recommend you experiment with different serves. Opting for tonic will feel natural with a bottle of gin and we recommend you go for Indian tonic and garnish with a slice of pear. However serving this gin with a cola really compliments the oak notes from the PX Sherry Cask Rum barrel.
